Investment Pieces

Happy Monday, friends! If there was ever a quintessential fall weekend, this was it. We ventured out to the American Royal on Friday night where the air was crisp and smelled of bonfire (and a whole lot of BBQ). Even though I came prepared in jeans, flannel and a felt fedora, I was cold after the sun went down. A sign that points out I am in no way, shape or form ready for what’s to come – both mentally and physically.

I did a quick survey of my closet over the weekend and it’s been decided I simply don’t own many clothes. I’ve purged and then purged some more and I’ve left myself with the bare bones. Here’s a quick snapshot of what I’m working with: Two pairs of jeans, two pairs of faded (and not in the good way) black pants, zero heavy sweaters, one turtleneck and a slew of light, long-sleeved tops. I’ll be doing a rundown of what’s hanging on my clothing rack over on Snapchat this week so you can see for yourself – find me at jessicazimlich!

I’m looking to add a few investment pieces that will get me through the next several months and well into next year’s season, too. I realize some of these pieces are a bit of a splurge, but I think of items in terms of cost-per-wear, which helps me justify the price tag. If I truly love an article and find myself reaching for it time and time again, it’s worth it to spend the extra money, opposed to purchasing something I’ll wear once or twice and then decide it’s really not “me.” I wore the same jean shorts all summer long and most definitely got my money’s worth.

cashmere ponchoturtleneck sweater and cashmere sweater would look great dressed down with a pair of jeans or dressed up with a suede skirt and a pair of boots. I love this white shell top (which would also look great with the suede skirt or a faux leather skirt and a blazer). I realize fringe is a trend, rather than a timeless piece, but I can’t stop coming back to this fringe cross body bag.

I’ve been combing the internet for a quality pair of black boots that are appropriate for both work and weekends, but I haven’t found the one yet. If you have any leads, by all means…

If you don’t have a heavy coat I HIGHLY recommend J.Crew’s stadium cocoon coat!

I saw that it was at J. Crew factory! I’m trying to decide if I need it or not since I just bought a coat during the Nordstrom sale and bought a new peacoat last year 😉

Love this roundup! I’m definitely making it a point to buy investment pieces, things that might be pricey, but are classic and that I can wear for years to come.

  5. Elizabeth and I were just talking about stocking up for fall. I still need to evaluate my closet to see what I have and what I need. I love all of these options – especially that cashmere poncho sweater!

  7. I saw your snap with the rolling rack and realized I need to do some serious closet clean out! ahhh, I apparently have a hard time getting rid of stuff but I have a ton of things that I just don’t wear! I love the idea about looking at the price tag from a cost per wear stand point and focusing on investment pieces!! 🙂 You are so wise girl!

PS- Have fun on your cruise!!!!!!
