Hello there! I’m not usually this chipper on Monday mornings, but Pete and I are heading to the Windy City on Friday and I’m like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. He’s never been before and I’m so excited to explore the city with him!
While I’m looking forward to indulging in the best eats the city has to offer, it’s no fun coming home from vacation feeling bloated and miserable with regret. I really enjoy being active in my everyday life and that goes for mini vacations as well.
So, what can you do?! Below are a few things I plan to implement on our weekend getaway.
– If your destination for dinner, sight seeing, etc. is nearby – walk! It’s a great way to absorb all the sights and sounds of the city, plus is saves money on cab fares. #doublewin
– If you’re interested in trying a new workout, this is a great time to do it. Maybe there’s an awesome trapeze class or a certain type of yoga studio that they don’t have back home. Contact the studio beforehand to see if they give a complimentary class to newbies! I’ve found that most places are more than willing to let you give them a try for the low low price of on the house.- Pop into the gym at the hotel for a quick 20 minutes on the treadmill to get the blood flowing. Not staying in a hotel? Give Β your morning run route a serious revamp and head into the great outdoors!
– Venture outside for a group activity like paddle-boarding! I’m crossing my fingers it’s warm enough to get out on the water while we’re in Chicago, but I don’t own a wet suit and I’m not trying to catch pneumonia either – we shall see.- Lastly, if there’s a pool, tread water like there’s no tomorrow. It will burn off all those cals from the fruity drink you have sitting by the edge of the water π
What do you do to stay active while on vacation?
p/s I know this completely contradicts everything I just said above, but life is all about balance. Iβm now taking recommendations on the best donut shop in Chicago.Β Maya,Β ErinΒ andΒ Sarah,Β I’ll be seeing you gals real soon!

Couldn’t agree more, especially with the bit about walking where you need to go. We’ve had some of the best little adventures just trying to find our way to our destination and wandering around the town or city!

Great tips! Have a blast in Chicago!! Can’t wait to hear all about it and see pictures!
Yay for coming to Chicago! I’ll tell the weather to be nice while you are here. If you are looking for any food suggestions, let me know! But as far as donuts go, Do-Rite is incredible. There is a location in the loop and one off of the Mag Mile. Have fun!!
Haha I LOVE that you just asked for donut shop recommendations. #bestbloggeraward

Great tips – for me it always feels a little tricky to workout on vaca. But I like the idea of walking and popping on the treadmill. Have a wonderful trip!

I tend to get lazy on vacay so I could definitely use a few of these tips, like the treading water…such a good idea!
P.S. Have you done the kayaking tour in Chicago?? It’s so fun and definitely a good way to stay active π
Great tips! And as far as donuts go, I’m an expert π Don’t miss Stan’s Donuts in Wicker Park, Doughnut Vault in River North and Do Rite Donuts in Streeterville & The Loop.
I just booked a flight to Chicago this morning for a birthday trip in December! I can’t wait! While I’m clueless with donuts, some deep dish pizza better be on your list as well.

You could kill two birds with one stone if the Doughnut Vault van is at Green Street Meats π And I’ve been told the donut milkshake at Beaver’s Donuts is amazing.
Can’t wait to see you girlfriend! These are also awesome tips – we should try and Aerial yoga class if you’re game π xx
You have to check out a Flywheel class while you’re in town!
I’m so impressed with you girlfriend. When I’m on vacation it’s all about, food, drinks and shopping. But I love your ideas of how to get a little bit of a sweat in on your time off. Enjoy your trip!

I feel like as long as I’m doing enough walking while on vacation, it all balances out. Hope you enjoy your trip and have some great donuts!

YES! So true. I was so bad over my last vacation. I even brought workout clothes and running shoes. I just didn’t get up early enough to make it happen π
It happens to the best of us π I did that on my last lake trip…what a joke! haha
Absolutely! Thank you so much, I’m really looking forward to it π
I can’t wait to see you next week! It’s been too long π
Haha wellllll, these things haven’t happened just yet. I’m hoping to at least get a little fitness in!
I just looked at the website and I’m hoping to take my first class – I’ve heard so many great things!
Let’s do it!! See you in a few short days π
I’m drooling. Thank you so much for the tips!
That will be such a fun way to celebrate! Oh girl, it is!! haha I’ve been daydreaming about it π
Perfect, one for each day I’m there! Thank you so much π
I do too, but I’m determined not to be this time around! I haven’t, but I’m looking into it now. Thanks for tip – that sounds like a lot of fun!
Thank you so much, Tali!
Hey, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do π
I sure hope so! Someone else recommended them so I’m giving them a try for sure! Where’s the best, cheesiest deep dish pizza? Haha
Thanks girl! π
Thank you so much, Kari!
That’s what I hope happens on this trip!
Cheesiest is definitely Giordano’s- they do the stuffed deep dish, so there is an entire extra layer of cheese! I also like Lou Malnati’s and Gino’s East, but they aren’t quite as cheesy π
Holy yum. Adding them to my list! Thank you so much! π
Lou Malnati’s is the best deep dish. 2 words: BUTTER CRUST
HOLY YUM. We are going there for sure!! Thanks for the heads up π
Great tips! I always try to stay active on vacation because of all the eating I am doing. Have so much fun. Chicago is a great town!
Oh girl, I’ve got the donut shops covered!! Travel safe and can’t wait to see you!! … speaking of workouts and vacation — maybe we can make out own donut/ cupcake tour across Chicago!??!
Awesome post! Whenever my boyfriend and I are on vacation, we eat A LOT since we’re foodies and we just want to try EVERYTHING. We walk a lot (more for sightseeing purposes) but now I’ll definitely think of it more as staying active.
Have fun in Chicago! I love Chicago and there last year. I would love to go back!

Staying active on vacation is always something I struggle with. I usually have every intention of working but my tennies just sit in my suit case the whole time. These are some great suggestions though! Thanks for sharing:)
Cheers,
Alyson
Haha, that happened last time I went to the lake! But I’m determined this time around π I’m glad you liked them!
Absolutely loving these tips – we have a few vacations coming up in October, and I’m banking on hiking saving my waistline from trip indulgences!
